A Message From Fr. Brian Lenz, Chaplain of Lumen Christi:

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. John 21: 15-17

When Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” in the Gospel of John, he is asking and challenging each one of us as to how we will respond. Jesus tells Peter that if he loves him, then he must feed his lambs. We are the lambs, the followers of Christ. At the same time, we also must become like Peter and feed our brothers and sisters.

We use the word ‘love’ rather easily, and do not realize what is entailed when we truly answer the question that Jesus asked Peter, “do you love me?” To love requires giving a great deal, and even sacrificing for the betterment of others. There is no question that being a part of the Lumen Christi community comes at great cost with great love.

Here at Lumen Christi, we have a chance to feed the lambs, to show that the love and the Light of Christ are alive and active. I witness this challenge to love and how it comes to life in so many ways. Faculty and staff are so willing and ready to help students and each other to build up His kingdom. Students give of their own time and resources to physically feed the most in need at the Interfaith Shelter of Jackson. I see a community come together in prayer in school and out-of school declaring to the world that just as St. Peter answered Christ’s question with ”Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you,” our answer is likewise a resounding “Yes!”

Lumen Christi – The Light of Christ

Through our Catholic education centered in the Light of Christ, students are challenged with the formation of the whole person. Our prayer is that they may be filled with His grace so that they may feed others His Light through generations to come.

Faith – our focus is on the meaning of Catholicism; a universal welcome to all

Excellence in Education – Preparing for personal success

Discipline – the development of the intelligent self-controlled individual led by restorative discipline and virtues for the formation of the whole person

Jamaican Mission Trip

Watch the Jamaican Mission Trip video to see our students living their faith by ministering to others both physically and spiritually.

Beginning in 2004, Lumen Christi students made their first trip to the Caribbean. Now, over 10 years later the excitement to be part of a mission trip to Jamaica soars to new heights. The trip is organized and coordinated by Lumen Christi in collaboration with IsleGo, who partners with schools and organizations to help design and manage short-term mission opportunities in Jamaica and Latin America. With high expectations to experience something very different, students and chaperones begin the trek knowing that personal involvement may influence one’s perspective on life. Each year, the Jamaica Mission is a continuation of a great tradition that fosters and builds relationships that have grown over the years.

The work projects are many and include continued work on the large community/resource center, an ongoing project that commenced in 2010. The students also work at the Grace Community Center in Steertown, a project that Lumen Christi has worked on at every mission over the last 10 years.  This dedication has resulted in a fully operational facility. Now, with each visit, one of the primary objectives is to perform maintenance and upkeep of the building. More than 400 students and chaperones have trekked to the far away over spring break since the mission’s inception – this advice is given from all those who have trodden this path to give back — “It is truly a life changing experience that occurs in just one week.”
